GOODMAN ZONE

3D PRINTED LIGHT WEIGHT AND DURABLE MEDIUM FORMAT FILM CAMERA

The Goodman Zone is a lightweight but sturdy 3D printed medium format camera that ticks all of the boxes. Designed for photographers seeking the unique experience of full manual control and zone focus in their workflow, the Goodman Zone is an attractive and innovative alternative to the conventional, not to mention more expensive, medium format cameras. Being lightweight, affordable, and durable means that you can take the Zone with you anywhere you go, from bustling city streets to the vast quiet wilderness, without any worries.

Photographing with a medium format camera is an exceptional experience; the format itself forces you to think about each and every shot, and the larger negative size gives way for fantastic details and smoother grain to shine through. With its array of handmade accessories, and various lens and back options, the Zone can be made according to your specific desires, heightening the joy of shooting 120 film. Whether you choose to build your own camera from our fully-equipped DIY kit or purchase a pre-assembled body with all the bells and whistles, the Goodman Zone is sure to become an integral addition to your camera collection.

COMPATIBILITY

The beauty of the Goodman Zone is that it is a truly modular system, meaning lenses and backs can be swapped out as needed, as well as the capability of adding a variety of accessories to the body itself. Originally built around the Mamiya Press lens lineup and RB67 Pro S back (the Pro SD back is not compatible), we have since expanded on this by creating our own proprietary   3D printed 6×6 film magazine. Using 120 film, our magazine works just like any other camera back, and can be purchased either with the Zone body or on its own.

Although neither the Pro S back or lenses are offered separately through our online store, there is a wide variety of lenses that are compatible with the Zone system, and they can be easily sourced in the second-hand market. Not wanting to limit the camera to only the Mamiya Press lineup of lenses, we recently created a helical adapter which now allows you to mount many large format lenses, depending on its flange focal distance, really giving you multiple options to help you unleash your full creative potential.

ZONE FOCUS AND VIEWFINDER OPTIONS

Zone focusing, also known as scale focusing, is essentially pre-focusing your lens at a specific distance and chosen aperture in order to obtain a sharp image. Using the distance markers on the Mamiya Press 50mm f6.3 lens as an example and setting the aperture at f11, if your focus is set to 1.5 meters (5 feet) then everything from a distance of 1 meter (3 feet) to 4 meters (13 feet) will be in focus. This method provides the ability to shoot quickly without worrying about focus, which can be notably handy when doing street photography or in other fast-paced situations.

When it comes to viewfinder options, there are a few. A sport finder is included with every purchase of a Zone body; however, if more precise framing is desired, we have also designed a 3D printed focusing screen that is secured to the camera by magnets, allowing you to effortlessly switch between the back and focusing screen, while making sure that your images are perfectly focused and composed. Additionally, many of the Mamiya Press lenses come with their own external viewfinder which can be attached via a cold shoe mount. And, last but not least, the Goodfinder app; using our holder to mount your smartphone on top of the body, the screen acts as a viewfinder and helps you compose your shots. The app is only available for iOS, but there are other options accessible to Android users.

DIY AND CUSTOMIZABLE

The Goodman Zone medium format film camera is also completely customizable according to your individual tastes. We have developed a variety of accessories that can be mounted to the body, from a grip, shutter release cable holder, pinhole board, and a smartphone holder, to name a few; all are sold separately in our online shop, and you can pick and choose the ones that will make your Zone experience convenient and fun.

For those who have always dreamed of building their own medium format camera, our fully-equipped DIY kit is the perfect solution; it is easy to assemble following along with our online tutorials and instruction guides.

The body itself can be ordered pre-assembled and ready to use with the your own Mamiya system. If you do not have the necessary Mamiya equipment, or simply wish to use other lenses and backs, our helical adapter and Goodman 6×6 magazine can be bought together with the body, and all you have to do is source your chosen large format lens.

Besides if you don’t have any lens and back that would fit the Zone, and you don’t feel like hunting these on your own, we also have full setups that you can purchase from us. These come with a lens, a magazine and various accessories, all assembled. Once loaded with film, you’re ready to go.

Constructing your own camera is not only an enjoyable experience, but also one that allows you to forge an unforgettable bond with it as you go, surely to become a long-lasting and important piece in your collection.

MAMIYA SYSTEM

The Goodman Zone was originally designed around the Mamiya system, using an RB67 Pro S back and the full lineup of legendary Mamiya Press lenses. Being amongst the more affordable and easily accessible options, we chose this system to ensure professional image quality at a lower price point.

HELICAL LENS ADAPTER & FOCUSING SCREEN

Not wanting to limit the Zone to only the Mamiya brand, we also developed a helical adapter that allows you to mount other large format lenses. To help with focus, included is a 3D printed focusing screen attached by magnets, making it conveniently interchangeable with either the Pro S back or the Goodman 6×6 magazine.

MAG66

Exclusively designed for the Zone, the 3D printed Goodman 6×6 magazine works like any other 120 film camera back. Since its inception, we have realized there is major potential to further expand on this idea, and the possibility of offering 6×9 and 6×12 magazines in the future is already in the works.
